ABOUT STANDING STITCHES
I will be using a few standing stitches in this pattern. Crystals and Crochet have a great tutorial about standing stitches you can find at http://www.crystalsandcrochet.com/crochet/starting-and-standing-stitches/
This square is made up of 4 smaller squares. I am giving instructions on how to attach them with sc on the right side of the work. You can put them together however you want though the sc adds texture to the square.
The side facing you is the right side (RS) of the work for the entirety of the three rows.
Round 1: With C1 ch5, sl st to 1st ch to form a loop, ch3, 2dc in loop, *ch2, 3dc in loop * 3 times, ch2, join with a sl st to top of beg ch3. 12dc Mark the middle stitch of each 3dc group made.
Round 2: ch3, dc in next 2 sts, * (2dc, ch2, 2dc in next ch sp), dc in next 3 sts * 3 times, then ( ) once more. Join with a sl st to top of beg ch3. Finish Off. 28dc
Round 3: Note: You will be skipping stitches in ths round that matches up with the fptr – this is intended. With C2 join with a sc in any ch2 sp, 2 sc in same space, * (sc in next 2 sts, fptr around marked st from rnd 1, sc in next st, fptr around the same marked st you did prev fptr around, sc in next 2 sts), 3sc in next ch2 sp * 3 times then ( ) once more. Join with a sl st to 1st sc. Finish Off. 32sc, 8fptr
PUTTING SQUARES TOGETHER
You will be working through both squares. Once you get to the corner of one set of squares you will continue with the next 2. This is to eliminate ends to weave in. However if you are uncomfortable with this way of putting the squares together just make sure they are put together.
With CC and WS facing each other – the RS is facing out and towards you – and working through both loops on each square join with a sc in middle sc on 3sc group corner of each square, sc in next 9 sts, hdc in next 2st corner of each square sc in next 10 sts. Do this the opposite way. 4 squares should now be one.
CONTINUING THE BIGGER SQUARE
Now that you have all four of the smaller squares put together to make one big square we need to finish up the bigger square. Round 1 is the border that will be the base round for the rest of the square.
Round 1: With C2 in any middle sc of 3sc group corner of any square join with a sc, 2sc in same st, * (sc in next 9 sts, hdc in next 2 sts These sts are the middle sc of 3sc group of the original squares – essentially doing a hdc in these 2 sts will prevent a dip in the middle of the side, 9 sc in next sts) 3sc in next st * 3 times then ( ) once more. Join with a sl st to 1st sc. Fasten off. 84sc, 8hdc
Round 2: With C1 in any middle sc of 3sc group corner of any square join with a sc, 2sc in same st, * (sc in next 22 sts), 3sc in next st * 3 times then ( ) once more. Join with a sl st to 1st sc. 96sc
Round 3: sl st to next st ch5 – counts as a dc & ch2 sp, dc in same st, * (sk next st, [v-st in next st, skip next 2 sts] 3 times, dc in next 4 sts, [sk 2 sts, v-st in next st] 3 times, sk next st, v-st in next st * 3 times then ( ) once more. Join with a sl st to 3rd ch of beg ch5. 28 v-st, 16dc
Round 4: sl st to next ch2 sp, ch1, * 3 sc in ch2 sp, skip next st, [sc in next st, 2sc in ch2 sp, sc in next st] 3 times, sc in next 4 sts, [sc in next st, 2sc in ch2 sp, sc in next st] 3 times, skip next st * 4 times. Join with a sl st to 1st sc. Finish Off. 124sc
~~ IF YOUR SQUARE IS NOT YET 9 INCHES ADD THIS ROUND ~~
Round 5: With C2 in any middle sc of 3sc group corner of any square join with a sc, 2sc in same st, * (sc in next 30 sts), 3sc in next st *3 times then ( ) 0nce more. Join with a sl st to 1st sc. Finish Off. 132sc
